Priority registration for Canada’s first LGBT or gay friendly retirement community opened to the public yesterday. Dean Malone, president and CEO of Plum Living Properties, told 24 Hours the landmark gay-friendly Vancouver real estate development project planned for the Mount Pleasant community. The Plum Living Properties LGBT retirement neighbourhood will offer one hundred and fifty independent living condo unit pre-construction suites with an additional 25 pre-sales gay-friendly condos for residents who need or want personal care. “For many people to be able to, from health care perspective, come out to their health care provider is a big deal especially as you age [and] your vulnerabilities increase,” he said. Vancouver-based Plum Living real estate devlopers partnered with RainbowVision Properties after completing a gay-friendly community questionnaire to access needs this year for the gay and LGBT retirement community. RainbowVision Properties of Santa Fe opened a similar gay-friendly real estate community in 2006 and plans to break grounds south of the border again this year with another retirement gay community in the works. Malone, 40, said 27 priority registrations have been secured with singles and couples placing a $1,000 refundable deposit for a RainbowVision Vancouver / Plum Living Properties real estate gay-friendly condo community. Malone expects that the majority of gay condo friendly suites by RainbowVision Vancouver and his company at Plum Living will be accounted for by early fall, allowing Vancouver real estate developers to begin securing property that is required for this development. “From the outside, this [real estate] development may not look that much different than something else you would see on the Vancouver landscape,” he said.
