Author and feng shui expert MaryAnn Russell has published a book that claims home renovations done using feng shui methods will result in a happier and healthier home. Feng Shui is an ancient Asian belief that physical placement affects the flow of universal forces, for good and bad. According to Russell, there are lots of different feng shui aspects of a property, from the neighbourhood setting to the interior of a bedroom or a kitchen. “You need to learn how to analyze all factors that make a home or property strong or weak and identify how to make the right improvements to fully explore personal development and maximize environmental potential at a reasonable cost,” Russell says. Her 166-page book, The Feng Shui Factor, Modern Homes Ancient Blueprint,” is available at selected bookstores through 1st World Publishing.
U.S. Buyers attracted to Vancouver
Despite a strong loonie and a Vancouver housing market that shows no sign of slowing down, well-heeled US investors in real estate still see BC as a prime real estate buy, the BC Real Estate Association says. For British Colubmia as a whole, average residential prices climbed 12 per cent in September to $436,000, compared to a year ago. Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar pushed through the US $1.05 barrier and is at the highest level in 50 years. The soaring loonie won’t deter most foreign buyers, except perhaps at the margins, said Cameron Muir, chief economist at the BC Real Estate Association. “The reality is many US and offshore buyers who are buying here are buying luxury condominiums,” he said.” Some of the latest ones downtown now are $2000 per square foot. Buyers in that category … are not as sensitive to exchange-rate changes because they have a high net worth.”

By Susan for the Townline Connect newsletter. “Demographics and architecture are our jumping off points,” says Scott Trepp of Trepp Design Inc. “There’s the potential purchaser and then there’s the architectural envelope – what’s inherent to the architecture and the area the project is in.” The unique architectural characteristics of 540 Beatty and 1241 Homer led Trepp Design Inc. to create two very distinctive designs for the display suites. With 540 Beatty’s exposed brick and concrete floors and ceilings, Trepp Design saw it as “a little bit more Crosstown, more edgy, more trendy.” In contrast 1241 Homer’s architectural inspired a “classic, sophisticated, refined” treatment. Trepp Design’s use of colour reflects this distinction. “With 540 Beatty’s brick and concrete, we took a distinct approach with colouration,” he says. This approach led to the choice of a bright orange sofa and hot accent walls. In 1241 Homer Yaletown, the Trepp Design inc team took a more monochromatic, subtle approach, using individual hits of fashion inspired hues. With Trepp Design Inc’s impressive body of work on multi-family and high-end residential buidlings, Trepp Design has plenty of advice for the homeowner looking for design inspiration. His first suggestion: throw out any preconceived ideas about how you lived in a previous home. “How you live in a space is dictated both by you and by the space itself,” Trepp says. And he always suggests incorporating pieces with character. “The things we aren’t inspired by are the things that are lacking personality.”
