The Shaw House in Vancouver Kits Neighbourhood

This is a bit different for the BUZZ as we would like to showcase a single family home in the Kitsilano community. It’s one of our favourite custom designed houses in the Vancouver West Side real estate market and we’re sure you’re going to love it too. The architecture is by Patkau Architects Inc and the structural engineer is Fast +Epp Structural Engineers. The photos in this blog page were taken by Paul Warchol and Undine Prohl. Please note that if you are looking for the ‘suspended swimming pool’ from the movie, This Means War, starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy or the Housewives of Vancouver, this is NOT the same place! Those television shows and movies were shot at The Keefer Suites in Downtown Vancouver, and not the Kits Vancouver Shaw House.

Named the “Shaw House” Vancouver, this magnificent piece of work is located in the prestigious and very sought after Kitsilano waterfront real estate district on the Westside Vancouver market. Not only is the exterior architecture minimalist, West Coast inspired, but the interiors are truly breathtaking. This doesn’t even count the endless panoramic views of the water and North Shore mountains from various vantage points from within the Vancouver Shaw House residence designed by Patkau Architects Inc. In actual fact, The Kitsilano Shaw House Vancouver single family home is not overly big, nor does it sit on an estate sized lot. The single family detached Vancouver West Side home at The Shaw House is only 285 square meters, or about 2850 square feet in interior living space. The luxury Vancouver Kits house is actually quite narrow (because of the narrowness of the lot) and therefore, the architect had to think outside the box … which meant outwards towards the water and upwards towards the sky. The generous ceiling heights make The Shaw House Vancouver home feel very big and airy which was exactly how Patkau Architects envisioned the space. Not only that, the world famous lap pool located on the 2nd floor of The Shaw House Vancouver West Side home transmits plenty of daylight into the residence through the acrylic glass. This light through the Vancouver Shaw House pool further enlightens the dining area, which rises from the ground level to the upper level of the Patkau Architects designed home. The breathtaking entrance to The Shaw House by Patkau Architects Inc sits directly under the lap pool, midway along the side of the West Side Vancouver home. The aqueous light from The Vancouver Shaw House lap pool is transmitted throughout the entry way as guests and residents can look up and through the glass bottom of the magnificent architectural feature. Inside, Patkau Architects as designed The Shaw House Vancouver Kits luxury home to have detailed exposed cast in place concrete throughout to give it a modern industrial West Coast feel. The open plan layout is also for today’s family, where you will find plenty of entertaining as well as relaxation space in addition to storage and flexible rooms.

The Kitsilano Vancouver Shaw House Project Team

The development and design team for this ultra fancy Kits Vancouver home at The Shaw House includes Patkau Architects Inc (architecture) which includes Michael Cunningham, John Patkau, Patricia Patkau, Peter Suter as well as Fast +Epp (Structural Engineers). The general contractor was Glover Co. and the photography by Paul Warchol and Undine Prohl. The name of the project is called The Shaw House located in Kitsilano community of Vancouver West Side market. Since being built, the Vancouver Shaw House has won numerous awards including the very prestigious National Honor Award in 2005 from the American Institute of Architects. It also gained media attention during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games when it was reported that a ‘sultan’ or ‘king’ had rented The Shaw House in Vancouver for the exciting event. With city bylaws, the land was designated to be single family but no more than 8 metres wide (26 feet). And this was the dilemma that Patkau Architects had to deal with during the design of the luxury home. With the restrictive building code and bylaws, Patkau Architects had to use their creativity and innovative designs to create one of the most significant designs ever. With the high seismic risk also adding to the complexity of the architectural design, the Kitsilano Vancouver Shaw House is almost entirely constructed with reinforced concrete. A special dense mix utilizing white cement keeps the Shaw House in Kitsilano Vancouver looking bright during frequent rainy weather. Inside this concrete shell, the Patkau Shaw House is insulated and clad with gypsum board. In areas where insulation not required, the concrete structure is exposed. Muted materials and colors – white painted walls, pale concrete floors, precast stair treads, and bleached millwork – allow natural light, even the soft light of winter, to describe the interior of the Patkau Shaw House in Vancouver.

More Information about The Shaw House Vancouver

The main floor of the Shaw House features the main living areas including the kitchen, dining and living rooms. On the upper floors are the bedrooms as well as the signature Shaw House swimming pool which is built above ground (very unusual for any building, let alone an earthquake zone). Because of these unusual architectural features, The Shaw House Vancouver is almost entirely reinforced with custom concrete work. As you can imagine, the construction and design was very painstaking and time consuming in order for everything to fall into place. Also, another notable feature for The Shaw House is that Patkau Architects used many of the local natural materials in part of the construction and design of the house. The home is both functional as it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye from every angle. The high ceiling heights as well as the functional living spaces make for an exceptional place to live, entertain, work and relax. Patkau Architects is well deserving of the accolades and awards garnered through their work on the Vancouver Shaw House in Kitsilano!
